Sketch 101: Intro to Comedy Writing (Saturday Morning)

Join us in this supportive and fun in-person class environment to explore the wonderful world of comedy writing. Whether you’re a performer looking to diversify your skill set or a complete beginner, this program is perfect for you. There are no prerequisites to begin, and we welcome all individuals, regardless of your previous writing or performing experience. Students will delve into the world of comedy writing theory and technique through a series of engaging writing exercises and assignments. You’ll learn how to generate, craft, rewrite, and refine original comedy content individually and collaboratively. 

By the end of Level One, each student will have the following deliverables:

  • A 2-person relationship sketch 

  • Character monologue
  • Commercial parody 
  • Premise sketch 
  • Topical sketch
  • Two Line Jokes (Weekend Update/Late Night Monologue) 

  • Fake headlines (The Onion/Reductress/Clickhole)

Sketch 201: Pitching and Collaboration (Sunday)

Dates: 9/22, 9/29, 10/6, 10/13, 10/20, 10/27

SUNDAYS 11:30-2:30pm

6 Weeks + A Showcase

Prerequisites: A laptop or tablet with wireless internet connectivity

18 & Over

In Sketch 201, students build off the comedy writing fundamentals they learned in Sketch 101, broadening their understanding of sketch and character archetypes, bolstering their writing skills as well as being introduced to collaborative content creation. Students will learn and practice the art of pitching an original idea, riffing in a writer’s room setting, offering punch-up ideas, co-writing, and re-writing.

Deliverables after Sketch 201 

  • Quick Premise Heighten Sketch
  • Archetypal Sketch (Fish Out of Water, Clash of Context, Impossible Task, Center/Eccentrics)
  • Satire Sketch or Desk piece (Last Week Tonight, Colbert, Daily Show)
  • Social Media Piece
  • Three blackouts (short one joke sketch)
